In a recent issue of Osteoporosis International, Bolland et al. [1] present serum 25(OH)D data on men 40 years of age and older living at approximately 37° S latitude (roughly equivalent to San Francisco, CA, in the northern hemisphere), a clime which they characterize as “subtropical”. They describe a very substantial seasonal variation, with an amplitude about twice that found in women, and with a year-round average 25(OH)D value of 84 nmol/L. They conclude from these data that “routine vitamin D supplementation for this population of men is not warranted.” …
