1] performed mastectomy in a quarter of patients (15/59) based on involved margin/s on intra-operative frozen section histology (IFSH). To consent a patient for two surgeries of very different magnitude based on a test that is not a standard-of-care and deciding on patient’s behalf while they are under anaesthesia, is at least ethically problematic if not medicolegally. Furthermore, the IFSH was falsely positive in 7 of 59 (12%) patients. This false-positivity proportion of 12% in those with a positive margin/s on IFSH is not low. Therefore, it would not be appropriate to offer mastectomy in these patients. …
