Molecular and biochemical characterization of Catharanthus roseus perivine-N<inf>β</inf>-methyltransferase
2022, PhytochemistryCitation Excerpt :While vobasine appears to be an intermediate in the biosynthesis of periformyline (Fig. 1) in C. roseus, this MIA and derivatives have been described in many plant species of the Apocynaceae family. Perivine and periformyline isolated from C. roseus (Farnsworth et al., 1968) were shown to inhibit polio and vaccinia viruses. Dregamine and its epimer tabernaemontanine derived from reduction of the alkene sidechain of vobasine are found in Tabernaemontana elegans and have been proposed as possible inhibitors of multidrug resistance mediated by P-glycoprotein in cancer cells (Paterna et al., 2017).
Isolation and biological activity of azocine and azocane alkaloids
2022, Bioorganic and Medicinal ChemistryCitation Excerpt :–)-Apparicine 75, along with some of its derivatives such as vallesamine and O-acetylvallesamine (77), were disclosed in 1984.95 ( –)-Apparicine 75 displays an impressive range of bioactivity, including antiviral activity against poliovirus type III,96 cytotoxicity to lymphocytic P-388 leukaemia cells (ED50 3.8 µg/mL)97 and is active towards a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.98 ( –)-Apparicine 75 is also a xanthine oxidase inhibitor (IC50 0.65 µM), comparable to the drug allopurinol (0.60 µM) used to treat gout and kidney stones.99 (
