Abstract

Nootkatol, a new sesquiterpene possessing calcium-antagonistic activity, was isolated from Alpinia oxyphylla Miquel and characterized as (2R,4R,55,7R)-eremophil-1 (10), 11-dien-2-ol.

The results showed that AOFP2 was a homoglycan consisting of → 4)-α-D-Glcp-(1→, →4,6)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → and T-α-Glcp, with an average molecular weight of 44.3 kDa. AOFP2 was eluted by 0.2 M NaCl solution using a DEAE-52 cellulose column, while AOFP1 was eluted by dH2O [4]. The structures of the two polysaccharides were different.

The vasodilation effects of A. oxyphylla were relevant to a large number of pharmacodynamic effects. Methanolic extract of the fruit of A. oxyphylla had calcium-antagonistic activity in the rabbit aorta (Shoji et al., 1984a). Just like verapamil and gallopamil, which have revealed selectively inhibition on the potassium chloride induced contraction of vascular smooth muscle.
