Biodegradable magnesium incorporated microspheres enable immunomodulation and spatiotemporal drug release for the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head
2023, Composites Part B: EngineeringCitation Excerpt :Researchers have revealed that the expression of IL-10 could promote the proliferation of MSCs [62,63], and with the assistance of BMP-2 [64], MSCs will finally differentiate into osteoblast for bone formation. However, the overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-1β, in the late stage could inhibit the proliferation of MSCs and promote the differentiation from macrophages to osteoclasts, resulting excessive bone resorption [65,66]. According to the results of this work and some previous studies, we reckon that Mg exerts immunomodulatory effects through the following two pathways: (1) The existence of Mg neutralizes the acid by-products produced by PLLA degradation.
