Endocrine Neoplasms

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 89))

Abstract

Parathyroid carcinoma is the rarest type of endocrine malignant tumor. Consequently, clinicians and pathologists not dealing with endocrine tumors will have a limited experience, which may affect the diagnosis and treatment of this tumor. Its natural growth pattern is that of a slowly growing neoplasm, and when recurrences eventually occur they are predominantly located cervically. This fact may initially lead the surgeon to assume that the tumor is not malignant. The term atypical adenoma was coined for borderline lesions with a clinically benign course [1].
