“Chlorhexidine: Attempts to Detect Percutaneous Absorption in Man”

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Chemotherapy ((CT,volume 3))

Abstract

Chlorhexidine is a very effective and widely used antiseptic first marketed in the U.K. in 1953 under the trade name ‘Hibitane’*. It is a strong base which is now extensively formulated as the water-soluble salt formed with 1,5-D-gluconolactone. The name chlorhexidine has an unfortunate resemblance to that of hexachlorophane, but the physical, chemical and antibacterial1 properties of the two compounds are quite different (Fig. 1).
