Die kognitive Verhaltenstherapie ist die Standardbehandlung spezifischer Phobien. Ziel der Behandlung ist eine Verringerung der durch bestimmte Situationen oder Objekte ausgelösten phobischen Angst und des damit verbundenen Vermeidungsverhaltens. Speziel die Reizexposition und Reaktionsverhinderung, häufig als Expositionstherapie bezeichnet, hat sich als äußerst erfolgreiche Methode zur Bewältigung spezifischer Phobien bewährt. Die Erfolgsquote der Expositionstherapie liegt zwischen 77–95% (Ost 2000). Die theoretische Grundlage beschreiben Netzwerktheorien der Emotionsverarbeitung (z. B. Foa u. Kozak 1986).
