Abstract
In contrast to the major advances in the treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the progress achieved in the therapy of children with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) has not been satisfactory. Until recently, no differences in therapeutic response and prognosis were found between children and adults with AML. While the majority of patients obtain a complete remission, remission duration has remained disappointingly short, ranging from 8 to 15 months [2, 10, 12, 19, 20, 25, 36, 39, 42, 44, 49]. Recent data from a study in the United States [55] and a multicenter trial in the Federal Republic of Germany [14, 15], however, suggest that a significant increase in the proportion of long-term survivors and possible cures in childhood AML have been achieved with prolonged, aggressive chemotherapy. In addition, bone marrow transplantation in first remission may provde a new approach for improvement of treatment results for AML, both in children and in young adults [23, 41, 52].
