Abstract
Among the varieties of early onset scoliosis (EOS), idiopathic EOS is the most amenable to casting, and may be either resolving or progressive. The progressive type can cause marked pulmonary constriction and lead to early death. The Mehta program of serial elongation, derotation, flexion (EDF) casting using the technique developed by Cotrel and Morel has proven effective in resolving the progressive infantile scoliosis in younger children with curves less than 50° and in either significantly delaying or eliminating the need for growing instrumentation in the large majority of children with either larger curves or syndromic diagnoses.
