Abstract
Esophagectomy with lymphadenectomy has improved the survival of patients with esophageal cancer [1, 2]. The morbidity and mortality associated with transthoracic (abdominothoracic) esophagectomy (TTE) is substantial, despite improvements in perioperative support, including anesthesia and postoperative intensive care [3, 4]. To decrease the complications of TTE, transhiatal esophagectomy (THE) has been adopted [5–8]. The disadvantages of THE are blind manipulation of the esophagus and the inability to perform lymph node dissection. With mediastinoscopy, THE decreased morbidity because of direct visualization of the mediastinal structures.
