The management of the patient with cerebral arterial gas embolism and ensuing elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is controversial and poorly studied. Most of the data is derived from case reports, retrospective analysis, or theoretical studies. For this reason the study by van Hulst and colleagues, in this issue of Intensive Care Medicine, is readily welcomed [1]. It is an important step in our understanding of cerebral arterial gas embolism (CAGE) insult and may help in the management of CAGE and other traumatic brain injuries. …
