Zusammenfassung

Das traditionelle Konzept einer zentralen Rolle der chronischen UV-Belastung in der Pathogenese des Pterygiums wird durch große epidemiologische Studien der letzten Jahre immer wieder bestätigt. Trotz einer hohen Prävalenz in manchen Populationen bzw. Regionen führt das Pterygium in extrem seltenen Fällen zu einer Erblindung. Neben einem äquatornahen geographischen Lebensort stellen langjährige Tätigkeit im Freien, steigendes Lebensalter und männliches Geschlecht die wichtigsten Risikofaktoren dar. Das regelmäßige Tragen von adäquatem Sonnenschutz hat eine nachgewiesene protektive Wirkung und wird als günstige und unkomplizierte Prophylaxe empfohlen.
