Circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and hypertension risk

We read with great interest the meta-analysis by Kunutsor et al. [
1] on vitamin D status [circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D 25((OH) D) levels and dietary vitamin D intake] and risk of hypertension. The results showed that the pooled relative risk (RR) of hypertension was 0.70 [95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.58–0.86] for the highest versus the lowest category of circulating 25(OH) D levels with 7 prospective studies from 6 articles (48,633 participants and 4,965 cases). In addition, the risk of hypertension decreased by 12 % [RR (95 % CI): 0.88 (0.81–0.97)] for every per 10 ng/ml increment in circulating 25(OH) D levels when assuming a linear dose–response relationship with 5 prospective studies from 4 articles. This is a very important investigation because there are conflicting results with regard to the association of circulating 25(OH) D levels with hypertension risk.
