Abstract

This Classic Article is a reprint of the original work by T. Gluck, Report on the positive results obtained by the modern surgical experiment regarding the suture and replacement of defects of superior tissue, as well as the utilization of re-absorbable and living tamponade in surgery. Editor’s Note: The meaning of “obstruction” in this context is unclear. It may relate to the filling of the medullary cavity with the device. Gluck seems to have induced bone and periosteal nerve death through medullary evacuation and periosteal stripping, which may have accounted for the pain loss observed.

Editor’s Note: Gluck’s meaning is unclear. Bone healing did not appear to be the goal of this procedure, as the structural integrity provided by the glass or ivory nail was sufficient to restore functionality, hence, “…fixation was disregarded.”
