Zusammenfassung

Immer mehr Menschen in Europa leiden unter Lebensmittelallergien und -unverträglichkeiten. Allerdings fehlen bisher repräsentative Daten über die Zahl der Betroffenen, die häufigsten Auslöser und die Kosten, die durch Lebensmittelallergien verursacht werden. Unter anderem diese Daten werden derzeit im Rahmen des Projekts EuroPrevall (The prevalence, cost and basis of food allergy across Europe) erhoben. Ziele des Projekts sind

1. Formen und Häufigkeit von Lebensmittelallergien bei Säuglingen, Kindern und Erwachsenen in Europa zu ermitteln,

2. verbesserte Methoden zur Diagnose zu entwickeln, um die Notwendigkeit von Provokationstests zu reduzieren,

3. Auswirkungen von Lebensmittelallergien auf die Lebensqualität zu bestimmen sowie die dadurch verursachten Kosten für die Betroffenen selbst, ihre Familien, die Arbeitgeber und das Gesundheitssystem.

Die neuen Erkenntnisse sollen die notwendigen Informationen und Instrumente für Politik und Lebensmittelindustrie liefern, um die Lebensqualität der Lebensmittelallergiker in Europa zu verbessern.

Abstract

More and more people in Europe suffer from food allergies and non allergic food hypersensitivities. However, representative estimates of how many individuals suffer from food allergy, the major foods involved and the costs caused by food allergies are still lacking. These data are collected within the framework of the EU-funded integrated project EuroPrevall (The prevalence, cost and basis of food allergy across Europe). Project objectives are

1. characterising the patterns and prevalence of food allergies across Europe in infants, children and adults,

2. developing methods to improve the quality of food allergy diagnosis, reducing the need for food challenge tests,

3. determining the impact of food allergies on the quality of life and its economic cost for food allergic people and their families, workplace and employers, and healthcare sufferers.

Based on this knowledge, informations and tools for politicians and the food industry will be generated to improve the quality of life of food allergy sufferers in Europe.
