Abstract
Aims and objectives
The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of awareness and management of dental trauma by primary school teachers in Al-Gurayat region of Saudi Arabia.
Methods
A questionnaire was designed to assess the demographic information, knowledge and awareness of the teachers regarding dental traumatology. The survey was conducted by the Al-Gurayat Dental Center in 200 schools in Al-Gurayat. The sample consisted of 855 primary school teachers (517 males and 338 females) with a working experience ranging from 1 to 15 years.
Results
Only 23 % had received first aid training and 10 % had been trained for managing dental emergencies. Deficiencies were recorded in the knowledge of school teachers for managing dental emergencies in the school. No statistically significant difference was found regarding age, sex, education or previous history of dental trauma; however, the teachers trained for first aid were better in answering all questions compared to their counterparts.
Conclusion
Regular dental education in the management of dental trauma programs should be structured and implemented for all school teachers of the Al-Gurayat Province of Saudi Arabia.
