Data on the growth patterns of the human heart against BSA indicate that the relationship between cardiac chamber size and BSA is exponential rather than linear.36 The changes in cardiac chamber size are proportional not only to cardiac output but also to heart rate and oxygen consumption during growth.37

2019, Journal of the American Society of EchocardiographyCitation Excerpt :Because BSA estimated using the Du Bois formula25 integrates both height and weight, it has been commonly deemed the most appropriate body size variable for scaling cardiovascular dimensions, although this formula was developed more than 100 years ago and was derived from only nine subjects.29 Recently, the accuracy of SVIM has been questioned on both theoretical and clinical grounds.3,7,10-12 However, because of the influence of traditional concepts and the lack of widely accepted alternative scaling models, the SVIM using BSA continues to be widely adopted and has been recommended in the guidelines of the American Society of Echocardiography and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging in 2005 and 2015.8,9
