Consistent with several previous reports we showed that comorbid factors such as renal failure, impaired ejection fraction, and a critical preoperative state were associated with early mortality [10-12]. Contrary to other reports hypercholesterolemia was shown to have a protective effect, which may reflect the positive effect of statin drugs on early outcomes [11].
