Oral Lesions Associated with Systemic Disease
2023, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North AmericaA Diagnostic Approach to Recurrent Orofacial Swelling: A Retrospective Study of 104 Patients
2017, Mayo Clinic ProceedingsCitation Excerpt :With clinical and histopathologic overlap, the relationship between OFG and CD is currently debated, but emerging evidence suggests that the 2 are distinct diseases.19-21 Oral manifestations described as specific to CD include cobblestoning of the oral mucosa, aphthous ulceration, involvement of the buccal sulci, mucosal tags, gingivitis, fistulae, and pyostomatitis vegetans.19,22-27 Increased levels of inflammatory markers19 and genotypic differences in nucleotide oligomerization domain 2 (NOD 2), a gene strongly associated with CD, have also been reported.28,29
Orofacial granulomatosis
2016, Clinics in DermatologyCitation Excerpt :It has been suggested that onset of OFG in childhood is predictive for the development of CD.76,88–91 Compared with OFG, features more commonly associated with oral CD include ulceration of the mucosa, involvement of the buccal sulcus, elevated inflammatory markers, fistulae, and pyostomatitis vegetans (Table 1).76–79,91 It has also been reported that compared with patients with oral CD, patients with OFG perceive greater overall discomfort, problems with their appearance, and social embarrassment as it relates to their disease.26
Gingival lesions in a 21-year-old man
2012, Journal of the American Dental AssociationCitation Excerpt :The significance of PV lies in its association with inflammatory disease of the bowel, including ulcerative colitis, Crohn disease, spastic colitis and chronic diarrhea. Investigators in several case reports and literature reviews have estimated that PV is associated with gastrointestinal disease in 75 percent of cases.13,14,15,16,17,18,19 Bowel disease often precedes the onset of oral lesions by months or years.
