Abstract

A technique for total bladder replacement using a detubularized sigmoid segment is described. The procedure is technically straightforward and results in a highly compliant, lowpressure reservoir that allows both day and night-time continence.

However, 2 girls who tolerated urethral catheterization were offered BNR and BA. Bladder substitution using the sigmoid colon (1 patient) was performed if the native bladder was not considered usable for the reconstruction and the child or the family did not accept cutaneous urinary diversion or Mainz II pouch (1 patient).10 The 21 patients referred with the same indications were similarly considered for salvage continence surgery (table 1).

To simplify analysis, of the 146 patients, only the men were included in this study. Of these 123 male patients, 75 had undergone ileal neobladder (IN) reconstruction (62 underwent the Hautmann5 and 13 the Studer2 procedure) and 48 had undergone sigmoid neobladder (SN) reconstruction (the Reddy6 method), performed by experienced surgeons. All the patients in the study had survived the operation and were free of cancer at analysis.
