Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), an endogenous metabolite of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), is found in all regions of the mammalian brain and considered to act as a neuromodulator or neurotransmitter (Cash, 1994; Maitre, 1997). High doses of exogenous GHB induce sedation, anesthesia and sleep (Cash, 1994; Carai et al., 2001).
