Drinking at European universities? A review of students' alcohol use
2010, Addictive BehaviorsCitation Excerpt :Comparatively few studies reported an absence of gender differences. Most of these studies examined student populations in northern Europe and looked at the prevalence of alcohol consumption (FIN: Nyström et al., 1993; GER: Stock et al., 2001; IRE: Dantzer et al., 2006; POL: Engs et al., 1991; SWE: Vaez & Laflamme, 2003; UK: Collier & Beales, 1989; Webb et al., 1996; Ashton & Kamali, 1995). Three studies concluded that women consumed alcohol as frequently as men (UK: Engs & Van Teijlingen, 1997; SWE: Johnsson & Berglund, 2006; NED: Plasschaert, Hoogstraten, van Emmerik, Webster, & Clayton, 2001), while six studies – all from the UK – found an almost equal percentage of “high-risk” volume drinking among male and female students alike (Bewick et al., 2008; Collier & Beales, 1989; Engs & Van Teijlingen, 1997; Granville-Chapman et al., 2001; Hannay, 1998; Pickard, Bates, Dorian, Greig, & Saint, 2000).
