    While neuropathic autoantibodies are suggested to be effectors of NPSLE [15,42], additional studies will be required in order to confirm the contribution of BCSFB disruption to the pathogenesis of NPSLE. Indications of the clinical relevance of this alternative route in human NPSLE includes reports of proteinaceous deposits within the CP basement membrane [43–45] and MRI imaging studies demonstrating periventricular white matter hyperintensities that may correlate with these regions being affected by BCSFB dysfunction [46]. Moreover, based on our study we suggest considering that previous data from both NPSLE patients and mouse models showing an increased albumin quotient (Qalb) and IgG index [5] reflects BCSFB rather than BBB leakage.

    In SLE patients, there have been several findings which similarly suggest choroid plexus involvement. These studies presented transmission electron microscopy data of patient choroid plexus tissue, identifying electron dense deposits in the epithelial basement membrane remarkably similar to those found in lupus glomerulonephritis [69–71]. Additionally, several case reports describing MRI evaluation of SLE patients with neuropsychiatric disease revealed choroid plexus abnormalities in anatomical and contrast enhanced sequences with concurrent aseptic pleiocytosis of the CSF, suggesting that the choroid plexus may have been a route of leukocyte entry in these patients [72].
