Incidence of aspiration in control piglets is not surprising given that aspiration has previously been found to be common in intact human and animal infants,[48-53] and may indicate the iSLN and sensory branch of the RLN may not be completely developed or sensitive to aspiration during early infancy. Although most human infants exhibit swallowing by 15 weeks gestation, the swallow trigger in a fluid-filled environment is likely governed by central pattern generators rather than a discrete bolus [54].
