Pathological findings
On gross examination the resection specimen comprising liver segments II and III (weight, 179 g) showed two sharply delineated tumors of roughly spherical shape (Fig 2). The maximum diameters of the tumors were 4.4 cm and 0.6 cm, respectively, and their distances to the resection margin were 1.6 cm and 2.6 cm, respectively. On histological evaluation, both tumors consisted of medium-size spindle cells with elongated nuclei and slightly eosinophilic cytoplasm, The cells were arranged in the
Discussion
De novo malignancies in patients suffering from immunodeficiency secondary to genetic disorders, immunosuppressive therapy, or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are well known.1 The risk of developing such malignancies (non-hodgkin’s lymphoma, Kaposi’s sarcoma, and carcinomas of the skin, kidney, cervix, vulva, liver, and biliary tree) following organ transplantation is increased with an overall incidence of about 6% (range, 4% to 18%).2, 3, 4 The incidence may still increase in forthcoming
