In cattle, the efficacy of ICSI is markably less than in horses (Katayose et al., 1999; Horiuchi et al., 2002; Devito et al., 2010); nonetheless, it is important to highlight that the PD was used for production of most of the ICSI calves (Horiuchi et al., 2002; Galli et al., 2003, Oikawa et al., 2005). In pigs, the utilization of the PD was associated with greater alteration of the sperm plasma membrane, and the rate of formation pronuclei was markedly greater when the PD was used than with utilization of conventional ICSI (Katayama et al., 2006).

This technique has also increased fertilization and blastocyst development rates in other mammals including cats, horses and cows (Katayose et al., 1999; Salgado et al., 2018; Tsujimoto et al., 2019). PIEZO-ICSI was first used in human ART in 1996, where it was shown that fertilization and embryo development rates were comparable with standard ICSI results reported elsewhere in the literature at the time (Huang et al., 1996).

An increased damage to the sperm plasma membrane at immobilization with piezo pulses has also been shown to improve fertilization and male pronucleus formation due to the accelerated dissociation of subacrosomal sperm perinuclear theca in pigs [35–37]. Whether this could be an alternative option to chemical activation in camels needs to be studied.
