Periodontitis and diabetes associations with measures of atherosclerosis and CHD
2012, AtherosclerosisCitation Excerpt :The focus of this study was to extend previous studies by our group to examine the relationship of periodontal disease and diabetes with noninvasive measures of atherosclerosis (intimal–medial wall thickness) and advanced atherosclerotic plaque formation (acoustic shadowing) in study participants free of CHD. Although studies have reported separately on associations of periodontitis and diabetes [28–30] and periodontitis and coronary heart disease [16,31,32], the impact of periodontitis on subclinical disease in the presence of diabetes is not well delineated. The findings from this study show that diabetes alone is associated with increased odds for IMT > 1 mm, but not shadowing or CHD.
