  • The therapeutics effects and toxic risk of Heracleum persicum Desf. extract on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

    2018, Toxicology Reports
    Citation Excerpt :

In this study, the plant extract treatment groups were not observed significant changes in the weight loss except for DH1, whereas decreased significatly in the DC group. The loss of body weight is caused by increase in muscle wasting and catabolism of fat and proteins [41]. Elevated muscle wasting and decrement of tissue proteins may have given rise to body weight loss in STZ- treated group [42].

  • Monomeric cocoa catechins enhance β-cell function by increasing mitochondrial respiration

    2017, Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry
    Citation Excerpt :

In a nonobese type 1 diabetic model, application of cocoa flavanols increases β-cell mass [12]. Additionally, cocoa flavanol treatment enhances DNA replication and regeneration of β-cells in rats [13–15]. Finally, in humans, cocoa flavanols enhance postprandial insulin secretion [16].

  • Mechanisms by which cocoa flavanols improve metabolic syndrome and related disorders

    2016, Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry
    Citation Excerpt :

Therefore, compounds and factors that enhance proliferation would have a direct therapeutic effect with patients suffering from T2DM or metabolic syndrome. Early studies demonstrated enhanced DNA replication and regeneration of β-cells when rats were treated with epicatechins [160–162]. Studies using quercetin (a flavonol, also found in cocoa) in the STZ-treated rat diabetes model demonstrated maintenance of β-cell mass, which could indicate decreased cell death or enhanced proliferation [153,154].
