2006, Best Practice and Research: Clinical RheumatologyCitation Excerpt :The capsid protein also contains epitopes for T-helper cells146,147 and for cytotoxic T cells.147,148 These capsid-protein-specific cytotoxic T cells may make an important contribution to elimination of RV148, as this virus has been isolated from patients with prolonged rubella-associated arthritis with apparently adequate antibody responses149, suggesting that antibodies alone may sometimes be insufficient to eradicate RV. Rubella may be diagnosed by isolation of virus from throat culture, but this method is insensitive, as virus shedding mostly precedes arthralgia.137
