Review: Identification and Management of Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders as a Transdiagnostic Feature in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
2021, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent PsychiatryCitation Excerpt :Plasma melatonin is hardly detectable in the first months after birth, with a clear day-night difference emerging after 3 months,88 followed by increasing nocturnal levels of melatonin peaking at 1–3 years of age, after which melatonin levels progressively decrease until adulthood with further moderate declines into old age.88,89 The decreasing plasma levels from childhood into adolescence are mainly explained by increased body size.89,90 Exogenous melatonin has several properties: it can act as a chronobiotic (a substance that is capable of entraining circadian rhythms); however, the exact dosing time is crucial for such uses.91–93
Sleep and puberty
2021, Current Opinion in Endocrine and Metabolic ResearchCitation Excerpt :Melatonin's role in suppressing the reproductive axis during the nonbreeding season in mammals [37,38], however, has raised concerns that long-term treatment may disrupt pubertal maturation in treated children. Cross-sectional studies in children have shown that melatonin levels decrease across puberty [39,40], are inversely correlated with serum LH levels [40], and are lower in children with CPP than in age-matched controls [41]; these associations are consistent with an inhibitory function of melatonin. Studies in the ewe suggest that melatonin acts in the medial basal hypothalamus [38], upstream of kisspeptin neurons (which lack the melatonin receptor 1A), possibly by influencing local triiodothyronine output by the pituitary pars tuberalis [42].
