2008, International Journal of Pediatric OtorhinolaryngologyCitation Excerpt :Postulates for the derivation of cervical thymic cysts range from a neoplastic process within the lymphoid component of the thymus, to inflammatory hyperplasia of the lymphoid component in response to acute infectious processes, to cystic and/or hemorrhagic changes within solid cervical thymic remnants [3,5]. In more recent years, the more popular theories comprise cystic degeneration of Hassell’s corpuscles or cystic changes within remnants of the thymopharyngeal duct, which is the progenitor to the thymus gland [2,3]. Rarely, thymic cysts may contain parathyroid cells, likely due to their similar origins [10–12].
