Tumor progression and invasion are strictly linked to the recruitment of peritumoral extracellular matrix (ECM)-producing cells (i.e., hepatic stellate cells (HSC), portal myofibroblasts and fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells) that become incorporated into the tumor stroma and are responsible for the important desmoplastic reaction typical of CCA [4]. The presence of abundant peritumoral and intratumoral ECM-producing cells, usually presenting the features of activated myofibroblasts, has been associated with a faster progression of different carcinomas [5–8], including intrahepatic CCA [9].
