This UTI predisposition might be related to the inhibition of the neutrophils and macrophages migration to the affected areas induced by glucocorticoids [8]. Typical UTI clinical signs include pollakiuria, dysuria, and hematuria; however, many dogs with HC may remain asymptomatic possibly due to cortisol anti-inflammatory effects [1], as well as due to polyuria secondary to HC-induced ADH inhibition [1] that can make it difficult for tutors to detect clinical signs, and by these ways classified as presenting subclinical bacteriuria (SB) [9].

Some authors sustain that approximately 16.6–22% of dogs with HAC present concurrent DM (Gomes Pöppl et al., 2016; Peterson et al., 1981), while others affirm that this association is around 5–10% (Ishino et al., 2010; Nichols, 1997) and that the overvaluation of this prevalence is due to diagnostic errors, as a result of the difficulty in interpreting the tests for HAC in special cases such as dogs with uncontrolled DM (Behrend, 2015; Kaplan et al., 1995). In the present study, we observed that the concurrence of HAC and DM in the city of Buenos Aires, during 2011 and 2015, was 13.61%, which was close to the value we had previously reported (Miceli et al., 2012).

Humans with hyperadrenocorticism have been reported to have the potential for both hypercoagulable and hypofibrinolytic states that are thought to contribute to a prothrombotic state, and thromboembolism has been a documented occurrence in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism as well.24,27,28 Hypofibrinolysis, hypercoagulability, platelet aggregation promotion, and endothelial dysfunction have been shown to exist to some degree in both hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus.29–31
