2021, CytokineCitation Excerpt :During the systemic inflammatory response following TKA, the increase in circulating interleukin (IL)-6 has been found to associate with pain, fever, and periprosthetic joint infections [1,2] while the elevation in circulating IL-10 reportedly correlates with the persistent deficits in physical function that commonly hinder the recovery from surgery [3]. An exaggerated increase in IL-6 relative to IL-10 (i.e., IL-6/IL-10 ratio) is suggestive of a pro-inflammatory predominance following TKA [4], and as demonstrated in other conditions, could be indicative of trauma severity [5] and predictive of poor outcomes [6,7]. Among other nutrients, vitamins C, D and E are capable of modulating circulating IL-6 and IL-10 concentrations or production [8–10], but unfortunately, decrease in the circulation during the systemic inflammatory response following TKA [11–13].

2018, Journal of Critical CareCitation Excerpt :Plasma interleukin 6 (IL-6), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, has been shown to increase following blast exposure to the chest in a murine animal model [27]. Previous work has shown that in human trauma patients, the ratio of IL-6 to interleukin-10 correlates well with severity of injury measured by injury severity score (ISS), and may be used as a predictor of severity of injury [28]. However, in another study of blunt chest trauma patients on an intensive care unit, the levels of IL-6 (and procalcitonin) in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid failed to show good correlation with the extent of lung contusion [29], although they were significantly elevated.

Changes in the IL-6/IL-10 ratio also correlated with a higher severity of other inflammatory responses (Taniguchi et al., 1999a, 1999b). The potential relevance of our finding is supported by other studies linking IL-6 and IFN-γ levels with depression, probably via modulation of central nervous system CNS processes by these cytokines.
