Growth hormone and testosterone were among the first researched targets in sarcopenia in the 1990s and were the dominant drug intervention for clinical trials in the early 2000s.126-130 However, the majority of clinical trials investigating testosterone/androgen treatment failed to demonstrate clinically significant improvements in muscle mass or strength, which shifted the focus to other targets to treat muscle wasting in aging.
