INTRODUCTION
Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders characterised by hyperglycaemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both [1]. Chemicals
Alloxan was purchased from Sulab’s Laboratory, Mumbai, India. Cholesterol and palmitic acid were purchased from the Central Drug House (P) Ltd., Mumbai, India. Potassium dihydrogen phosphate and sodium metaperiodate were purchased from Fischer Chemicals, Chennai, India. Sodium bisulphite, sodium sulphite and ferric chloride were purchased from Nice Chemicals, Kerala. Sodium diethyl dithio carbamate was purchased from Sd. Fine Chemicals (P) Ltd., Mumbai, India.

RESULTS
Changes in initial and final body weight in control and experimental groups are shown in Table I. Significant weight loss was observed in diabetic rats than control animals. Treatment with cumin or glibenclamide improved the weight gain as compared to diabetic animals.
Alterations in the blood glucose and urine glucose on treatment of diabetic rats with cumin and glibenclamide are given in Table II. The blood glucose and urine sugar were significantly increased in alloxan diabetic rats as
DISCUSSION
Alloxan, a beta cytotoxin induces “chemical diabetes” (alloxan diabetes) in a wide variety of animal species by damaging the insulin secreting cells of the pancreas [17]. This experimental animal model of diabetes mellitus is similar to type I diabetes, in which insulin secretion is defective. Literature sources indicate that alloxan diabetic rats are hyperglycaemic [18]. Cumin essential oils (obtained from Cuminum cyminum), CEOS, is a great source of biologically active constituents including D-limonene, eugenol, P-cymene, γ -terpinene, and cumin aldehyde (B. Prakash et al., 2015), which offer strong antioxidants (Moghaddam, Miran, Pirbalouti, Mehdizadeh, & Ghaderi, 2015), antimicrobial (Q. Chen et al., 2014), antidiabetic (Dhandapani, Subramanian, Rajagopal, & Namasivayam, 2002) and anticancer activities (Sowbhagya, Srinivas, Purnima, & Krishnamurthy, 2011).
