2020, HeliyonCitation Excerpt :Hence, in addition to in vitro lipid peroxidation inhibition assay, the ability of EaF10 to scavenge synthetic DPPH radical, as well as HO˙ and NO˙, two radicals found in biological system, were analyzed. Indeed, these free radicals oxidize and damage polyunsaturated fatty acids present in cell membrane, leading to lipid peroxidation [54]; and free radical scavenging being one of the mechanism by which antioxidants prevent oxidation of biological molecules [55]. In radical-scavenging/inhibitory assays, the low EC50/IC50 values (Table 2) for EaF10 was comparable to that of ascorbic acid, used as reference antioxidant compound and therefore, indicate the strong antioxidant capacity of this fraction.

Previously, anti-inflammatory (Bani et al., 1996; Yasukawa et al., 2000; Battu et al., 2011; Shih et al., 2010; Li et al., 2003), antimicrobial (Natarajan et al., 2005; Madureira et al., 2003; Lone et al., 2012), antioxidant (Barla et al., 2007; Cateni et al., 2014; Sharma et al., 2014) and wound-healing activities of Euphorbia species have been investigated (Bigoniya and Rana, 2007; Goyal et al., 2012; Jaiprakash and Reddy, 2006). There are few reports in the literature related to biological activity of E. characias subsp. wulfenii.
