Abstract

Bochdalek hernia is a type of congenital diaphragmatic hernia that typically presents in childhood, but may rarely be detected in adults. The treatment of choice is operative repair due to the risk of visceral herniation and strangulation.

A Bochdalek’s hernia is a congenital diaphragmatic hernia that arises as a result of improper fusion of the posterolateral diaphragmatic foramina. It was first described by Bochdalek in 1848, although descriptions of the hernia have dated back to writings in 1690 [1], [2]. It is a common congenital anomaly, occurring in approximately 1 in 2200 to 12,500 live births, but is widely considered to be extremely rare in adults [3].
