Allergy is a major public health problem in a few decades and it is now recognized as a major global epidemic (Linneberg, 2016; Ring et al., 2014). Exposure to allergenic pollen is a major trigger of allergic rhinitis (AR), allergic conjunctivitis, and allergic asthma which may lead to death (Beggs, 2017; Erbas et al., 2012; Salo et al., 2011). It is estimated that allergic rhinitis is currently affecting up to 30% of the population, and 150 million inhabitants alone in European Union are suffering from chronic allergic disease (Galera et al., 2018; Pawankar et al., 2013).

As soon as the raindrops hit the ground, the effect generates water jets, which break up into aerosol, as shown in a recent study based on high-speed imaging.72 Taken together, these data indicate that small (approximately 5 μm) microdroplets can carry allergens, providing an explanation of thunderstorm-related asthma73,74 and of the mechanisms of pollen-induced asthma (Fig 3).75 With the first descriptions of PM attached on the surface of birch pollen collected in urban areas compared with that from a rural environment, an impressive amount of data have been produced about the effects of air pollution on pollen allergenicity, although only a few of them are recent.76
