2013, Research in MicrobiologyCitation Excerpt :Because the susceptibility to antifungal agents is strongly species-dependent (Pappas et al., 2004), accurate and fast identification of species can facilitate the start-up of an antifungal treatment. Since conventional phenotypic methods are often time-consuming and results are sometimes ambiguous, molecular techniques for routine identification of fungi have been developed, increasing the accuracy of identification and greatly reducing the analysis time (Arabatzis et al., 2006, 2007; Arancia et al., 2011; De Baere et al., 2002; Mandviwala et al., 2010; Marklein et al., 2009; Massonet et al., 2004; Turenne et al., 1999). Here we report the use of a combination of quantitative PCR (qPCR) of the internally transcribed spacer region 2 (ITS2) and melting curve analysis (MCA) for identification of the clinically most important Candida species and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
