Methods
Patient-specific data were abstracted from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, which maintains data collected by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) on all candidates for and recipients of solid-organ Txs in USA, obtained at the time of Tx and annual follow-up.
Results
From 1987 to 2007, 4,554 subjects underwent pediatric heart Tx. Of this cohort, 45 received subsequent renal Tx; 3 underwent renal re-Tx between 5 months and 7.5 years after first renal Tx. The mean age at renal Tx for the 45 subjects was 19.1 ± 6.1 years. The mean duration from primary heart Tx to renal Tx was 11.0 ± 4.2 years. There were 5 subjects who underwent renal Tx at the time of cardiac re-Tx for combined heart graft failure and renal insufficiency. Thirty-seven renal Tx recipients
Discussion
This study represents the first analysis of outcomes after renal Tx in pediatric heart Tx patients. The outcomes of these patients after renal Tx appear to be favorable, with 1- and 5-year patient survival rates of 91% and 91%, respectively, and are similar to the overall cohort of pediatric renal Tx recipients at 98% and 94%.15 Our analysis suggests that approximately 1% of the long-term survivors after a pediatric heart Tx received a subsequent renal Tx.

2016, Progress in Pediatric CardiologyCitation Excerpt :Majority (76%) of heart transplant patients were started on dialysis prior to renal transplantation, the most common form of dialysis being hemodialysis. The mean 1 and 5-year survival after renal transplantation were no different when compared to those who did not need renal transplantation in this pediatric heart transplant cohort [34]. A vigilant monitoring and an active surveillance for CKD are essential and should begin from the time of listing for heart transplant.
