    Citation Excerpt :

Numerous epidemiologic studies have shown favorable effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality with light to moderate alcohol consumption (with some studies showing a neutral effect).1 Contrary to the potential cardioprotective effect of moderate alcohol consumption, heavy and binge drinking are associated with higher CVD risks.1 For example, in a meta-analysis of 28 cohort studies, there was a 20% relative risk reduction in coronary heart disease (CHD) with up to 20 g/day of alcohol consumed, and evidence of a protective effect up to 72 g/day, but increased CHD risk above 89 g/day (1 drink is approximately 15 grams).2
