Patients
The records were reviewed of 239 patients (100 females and 139 males) who underwent 305 surgical procedures for an ameloblastoma in the mandible or maxilla over a period of 22 years (mean time: 8 years, 1980–2002) at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Seoul National University Hospital (Seoul, Republic of Korea). The minimum follow up was 1 year. The patients’ ages ranged from 9 to 83 years (mean 34.5 years). All information with respect to age, gender, tumour location,
Gender and age
The statistical results regarding age, gender and location were similar to those reported by other investigators. There was no gender predilection in age of occurrence. The correlation between gender or age and recurrence was not significant (χ2 = 1.631, p = 0.202 and χ2 = 12.415, p = 0.134, respectively).
Localization
The localization of the ameloblastomas is presented in (Fig. 1). The overall prevalence in the mandible (210 cases) was approximately seven times higher than in the maxilla (29 cases). The most
Discussion
Recurrence of an ameloblastoma in large part reflects the inadequacy or failure of the primary surgical procedure10. The treatment is an important prognostic factor, as suggested in several studies1, 3, 8. Various treatment methods for the lesion in relation to many factors, such as the tumour size and location, have been suggested. These include enucleation, marginal resection and aggressive resection. Due to the strong likelihood of a recurrence, curettage or mass excision without a safety
