Abstract

The interplay between anxiety pathology and substance use disorders is increasingly recognized in empirical and clinical work. The present article serves as a general introduction to the special series highlighting the relationship between a number of anxiety conditions and a variety of substance use disorders. In this overview, we first discuss the importance of better understanding the association between anxiety and substance use and abuse followed by a brief review of each study and their major findings. This set of studies has implications for our understanding of the nature of these conditions as well as their treatment. We hope that this body of work will inspire future research in this important area.

However, panic attacks do not always lead to more severe forms of psychopathology (Norton et al., 1992, 1985, 1999). There exists a longstanding association between substance abuse problems and anxiety disorders, including panic attacks (Cox et al., 1990; Kushner et al., 2000; Quitkin et al., 1972; Stewart, 1996; Zvolensky and Schmidt, 2004). However, these studies – more often than not – analyze all anxiety disorders making it impossible to differentiate between panic disorders, panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorder, etc.

Comorbid SoAD and AUD affect 2.4% of the general population (Schneier et al., 2010). Alcohol is more likely to be abused than other drug by patients with SoAD because of its tranquilizing effects (Zvolensky & Schmidt, 2004). One possible exception to this may be adolescents who often have easier access to cannabis and the support of its use by their social network.

  • Incremental validity of anxiety sensitivity in relation to Marijuana withdrawal symptoms

    2007, Addictive Behaviors
    Citation Excerpt :

There is little empirical study of the factors that may relate to the nature of marijuana withdrawal symptoms. Drawing from anxiety-substance use comorbidity work (Stewart & Kushner, 2001; Zvolensky & Schmidt, 2004), AS has emerged as a cognitive factor related to affect-relevant addictive behavior processes. The present study sought to extend past work on AS to the study of marijuana withdrawal symptoms by evaluating whether this cognitive factor was incrementally related to marijuana withdrawal symptoms among a young adult sample of current marijuana users.

  • The association between heroin use and anxiety sensitivity among inner-city individuals in residential drug use treatment

    2006, Behaviour Research and Therapy
    Citation Excerpt :

Since the late 1980s, separate lines of research have generally supported the AS model of panic disorder vulnerability (see Taylor, 1999). More recent research suggests an association between AS and certain types of substance use patterns (see Otto, Safren, & Pollack, 2004; Stewart & Kushner, 2001; Zvolensky & Schmidt, 2004). Although the vast majority of work thus far completed in this domain has focused on alcohol-related problems (see Stewart, Samoluk, & MacDonald, 1999, for a review) and smoking (see Zvolensky, Schmidt, & Stewart, 2003, for a review), potential relationships between AS and other more severe types of drug use remain largely unexplored.
