Perinatal (fetal and neonatal) germ cell tumors1

Results
Five hundred thirty-four fetuses and neonates presented with teratomas, 225 diagnosed prenatally and 309 at birth (Table 1). Sacrococcygeal teratoma was the leading teratoma (214, 40%). Next were intracranial (71, 13.3%) and cervical teratomas (70, 13.1%) followed by palatal and nasopharyngeal (41, 8%), cardiac (40, 7.5%), gastric (14, 2.6%), mediastinal (13, 2.6%), orbital (13, 2.4%), facial (8, 1.5%), and placental teratomas (8, 1.5%). There were 17 (3%) miscellaneous teratomas variously
Discussion
Germ cell tumors are a varied group of benign and malignant neoplasms occurring in the perinatal period. They are found in various sites, both gonadal and extragonadal, the latter in midline locations such as the sacrococcygeal area, retroperitoneum, mediastinum, neck, and intracranial region (Table 1).1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15 Most germ cell tumors of the fetus and neonate are histologically benign and are classified as either mature or immature teratomas.4, 6, 9, 10, 17 Yolk sac tumor
