Involuntary attention impairment in early Parkinson's disease: An event-related potential study
Highlights
► Mismatch negativity is not altered in the initial stages of Parkinson's disease. ► Early Parkinson's disease shows a reduction in P3a amplitude. ► Dopaminergic therapy modulates reorientation negativity in Parkinson's disease.

Attentional impairment in Parkinson's disease is modulated by side of onset: Neurophysiological evidence
2023, Clinical NeurophysiologyCitation Excerpt :Although there is a wide body of research on the cognitive differences between left vs right onset PD (Erro et al., 2013, Marinus and van Hilten, 2015, Modestino et al., 2017, Pellicano et al., 2015), as far as we know, this is the first study that reports differences using neurophysiological measures. Moreover, significant reductions in P3a have been reported in groups of PD patients (Solís-Vivanco et al., 2011, Solís-Vivanco et al., 2015, Tsuchiya et al., 2000), however, the side of onset of the motor symptoms was not considered in these studies. The P3a amplitude attenuation reported in PD in oddball-like paradigms may indicate greater resistance to distraction in these patients (Seer et al., 2016) or an impediment to direct attention to potentially important changes in the environment (Barry et al., 2016).

2019, International Journal of PsychophysiologyCitation Excerpt :Additionally, patients with PD may show difficulties for shifting the focus of attention, and adapting to environmental changes (Rustamov et al., 2014). In the last decade, there has been increasing interest to investigate cognition-based biological markers for the early identification and progression tracking of PD, among which ERP have been included (Solís-Vivanco et al., 2009; Solís-Vivanco et al., 2011; Sharma et al., 2013). Tsuchiya et al. (2000) showed reduced amplitudes of P3a in frontal electrodes associated with the characteristic executive function deficiencies in these patients, especially verbal fluency and cognitive flexibility.
