Renal transplant: kidney donorLaparoscopic living donor nephrectomy in Italy: a national profile☆
Section snippets
Material and methods
In June 2003, a simple self-administered questionnaire on the practice of living donor nephrectomy was sent to the 37 Italian kidney transplant centers. The survey included several items about each center's views on LLDN in general and on personal current experience with the procedure up to May 31, 2003. For those workers who had already performed at least one LLDN, the questionnaire also focused on the specific laparoscopic experience of the surgeons performing LLDN, how the operation affected
Results
Every center mailed back the questionnaire for analysis (return rate 100%). One hundred thirteen (28.2%) of 401 living donor kidney transplants performed in Italy between January 2000 and May 31, 2003, were removed by the laparoscopic approach (Table 1). Thirteen centers (35%) had performed at least one LLDN. Seventy-three LLDNs (68.2%) represented the case load of the two centers with the largest experience. Of the 113 cases done until May 31, 2003, 99 were left kidney donations, with only 14
Discussion
The availability of minimally invasive techniques for advanced procedures has led to increased enthusiasm for living kidney donation, because the laparoscopic approach is believed to result in less postoperative morbidity and superior cosmetic results. Some transplant surgeons are more willing to recommend this surgery and some patients might be more willing to accept it. The combination of these two factors has contributed in the United States to an increased rate of living kidney donation.7,
