Abstract
Background: Previous studies indicate that children and adolescents with social anxiety disorder have not only emotional competence deficits in recognition and expression of emotion but also difficulties with emotion regulation. Objective: Are there differences between children and adolescents with and without social anxiety disorder regarding adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation? Method: Recording the ability of emotion regulation of socially anxious children and adolescents (proven diagnosis: n = 59; without proven diagnosis: n = 36) and children and adolescents without social anxiety (n = 146) using the German questionnaire FEEL-KJ. Results: Children and adolescents with social anxiety disorder apply significantly less adaptive and increased maladaptive strategies of emotion regulation in comparison to controls. Conclusions: Difficulties in the regulation of negative emotions seem to be associated with social anxiety.
