Abstract
THE amino-acid tryptophan has a special role as a precursor of the putative transmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT). Furthermore, in the brain, tryptophan hydroxylase, the rate-limiting enzyme for 5HT synthesis, is normally unsaturated with tryptophan1,2. Therefore any mechanism by which brain tryptophan concentration can be altered may conceivably be able to influence brain function.
